Camberwell Side Return

South-East London

Planning Consent Granted March 2020

A planning approved proposal for a side-return to improve the quality of living space in this house in Camberwell.

The house had previously had a small kitchen extension which although functional, created a detachment between the living space and the garden. The narrow space between the boundary and the closet wing was space that was not useful as hard or soft landscaping and therefore a side-return infill that provides new living space linked to the garden was a logical step.

The proposed side return unifies the ground floor of the house with narrow batten timber cladding. The infill projects beyond the original extent of the closet return providing the opportunity for a clerestory window that provides visual interest and unexpected natural light into the new dining area.
